How to Fix the Audio Problem on HP Mini NotebooksThe HP Mini 1000 series notebooks (including 1010NR, 1030NR, and 1035NR) are very slick compact machines that adequately serve their purpose as mini portable mini laptops. They do, however, come standard with one major flaw - The audio quality out-of-the box is very poor. Even the nicest set of external speakers can't save your Zeppelin tracks from sounding like they're playing from a Dixie cup on a string. This is because it isn't a problem with the hardware to begin with. It's a software issue, and I'll tell you how to fix it.
Instructions
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
XP audio drivers in the HP Mini notebooks, particularly the IDT HD audio codec, are developed with a filter that protects the laptop speakers from the treachery of high volume. Unfortunately, this also effects the external output when listening through headphones or external speakers. The IDT drivers for Vista on the other hand, don't include this filter, so your external output quality sounds great, like it should. What we're going to do is uninstall the current XP driver, and replace it with its Vista counterpart.
Step2
Go into "Add or Remove Programs" on your Windows XP mini laptop. This can be accessed through Control Panel. If you're feeling cool, you can enter "appwiz.cpl" as a "run" command for the same result.
Step3
Locate "IDT HD audio" from the list and remove, or "uninstall" it. Basically just keep clicking "next", "ok", and "yes" until the removal is complete. Your shoddy XP version of the audio software has now been removed.
Step4
Follow the link in the Resources section below titled, "IDT audio driver - sp40714.exe". I promise, you can trust the link and the software - it's from an HP website...then again, they caused this whole fiasco in the first place. Anyway, just download and save the file to a place where you'll remember it.
Step5
Install the software: Double click the "sp40714.exe" file that you just downloaded, and install the software. The notebook will restart, so please save any open documents ahead of time.
Step6
Once your mini laptop has rebooted, plug in some decent speakers, make like MC5, and kick out the motherlovin' jams!
